Doubled Haploid Production

Doubled haploid (DH) lines, which are generated through in vivo induction of maternal haploids and followed by artificial chromosome doubling, have been used routinely in many maize breeding programs. The maternal haploids are produced through the elimination of sperm cell chromosomes after the fusion of the egg cell with the defective sperm cell. Some of the advantages of using DH lines in a breeding program include, but are not limited to: (1) reducing the time of a breeding cycle due to rapid achievement of homozygous inbred lines with desired uniformity and stability, (2) maximizing the genetic variance among the progenies derived from two or more elite parental lines, (3) reducing the cost of maize inbred line production, (4) increasing the breeding efficiency by means of marker applications for molecular breeding, etc. Listed below are some of the service providers that have the relevant facilities to accommodate the DH line production for maize or other crops.

International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT)

In order to reduce the time for producing maize inbred lines thus accelerate the development of improved varieties for the resource-poor farmers in the developing countries, CIMMYT's Global Maize Program has established and operated maize doubled haploid (DH) facilities in Kiboko, Kenya and Texcoco, Mexico. These innovative facilities are very important for strengthening the maize breeding programs and improving the breeding efficiency in Africa, Latin America and Asia. In the mean time, the DH facilities at both locations also serve as the training hubs for the staff from the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) as well as small and medium-sized seed companies from the developing countries.

Heartland Plant Innovations, Inc.

Heartland Plant Innovations (HPI) produces doubled haploid lines on order, starting with seeds you provide by mail. HPI can generally produce 10 to 20 doubled haploids per seed: if you provide five to 10 seeds, they will return 50 to 100 doubled haploid lines. For each doubled haploid line, a total of 20 seeds could be returned, though they can produce more if the delivery time is extended by a few months. Additional seeds can be requested in the Special Requests section of the doubled haploid order form. The HPI doubled haploid production process takes approximately one year and costs $30 per delivered line.
