Analyses of certain secondary traits or metabolites that are indicative of plant stress tolerance can potentially provide valuable information to be used in breeding. Such analyses are generally prohibitively expensive if done locally, as it is difficult to maintain assay quality and devote the necessary resources for expertise, quality control and specialised facilities.

The Plant Accelerator®

The Plant Accelerator® at The University of Adelaide, Australia provides the facility to increase the speed and scale of plant physiological measurements and to address the phenotyping bottleneck that is restricting the flow-through of genomics advances into improvements in crop performance. The facility carries out projects with large populations of plants and facilitates the genetic studies to identify the molecular basis of complex physiological traits. It also provides a better understanding of how environmental components, both natural and artificial, affect plant growth and performance.

Metabolon is involved in plant metabolism and metabolic network analysis, optimization of crop trait development (yield, quality, stress tolerance, etc.). It offers a metabolomics-driven biochemical profiling platform through its mView™ services. The patented platform provides a global analysis of complex biological samples for the discovery of markers and pathways associated with traits of interest.

This service is undertaken to understand the biochemical changes in a complex biological system by comparing relative changes in biochemical concentrations between control and treated groups. The study involves analyzing hundreds of biochemicals in a sample, detecting amino acids, carbohydrates, lipids, cofactors, nucleosides and other biochemicals.
